When I first arrived in South Carolina, I got: “What kind of accent is that??” and “A young lady left a message on my voicemail, but I could not understand a word she said.”… “Yes, that was me, ma’aaaaaaam.” There is also job discrimination against those who are “different”, but we won’t even go there, because I will not make this blog political…

So after my first year back to the USA, this time to live in Columbia, where my husband studied for his I.M.B.A. at the University of South Carolina, I had a phone conversation with a good friend of mine from high-school, Perrine. I really had not spoken any French in a while (at that time, our home language was English).

I had to think about it for a minute, and then we broke out into laughter!! Yes, the unthinkable had happened. A complete reverse culture, well language, shock…

I am an optimist, always have been. And when I deal with a tough situation or face hardships and challenges, I first let the negative out (whether it is a good scream, cry, kick, workout or knockout – nobody is injured though, I promise). Then, once I am calmed down, I go into a meditative mode and I pray, sing, count my blessings. And when I do, I realize that I have a wonderful life!

Today’s word is intelligent, only in the sense that if you use this term in speaking French, you demonstrate a higher command of the language, a more advanced level. It is not pompous either, so go ahead, use it!

ATTENTION!!

Don’t mix up with the noun “Le comble”, which figuratively, means “the height of…” and literally means “roof space”!

Ce n’est pas parce qu’on est invisible qu’on n’existe pas…

Jour après jour, j’interprète entre l’anglais et le français, par téléphone, de mon bureau à domicile. Vous me direz : « Quelle chanceuse, elle travaille en pyjamas toute la journée, et elle est payée à la minute ! Pas besoin de se soucier d’acquérir de nouveaux clients ou de la comptabilité, ça sonne et elle répond. »

C’est vrai. J’ai de la chance et j’adore mon métier ! Je suis la porte-parole pour des francophones avec un niveau d’anglais limité, qui sont fâchés, frustrés, blessés, mécontents, exigeants ; ou parfois, ils sont de bonne humeur mais ils ont tout simplement besoin d’un renseignement dans leur langue (ça ne sert à rien un renseignement qu’on ne comprend pas, n’est-ce pas ?).

Cependant, parfois (oui, juste quand ça me prend), j’ai envie de pousser un petit coup de gueule… et ce sera d’ailleurs notre mot d’émotion d’aujourd’hui :

Ne vous inquiétez pas, je suis calme et je ne dirai ici rien qui pourrait compromettre mon honneur d’interprète, ni mon sens moral et éthique… Mais dans ce rôle d’interprète, j’entrevois des petits  aperçus dans la vie des gens. J’ai tendance à essayer de me faire oublier,  puisque j’essaie d’être l’instrument d’une communication fluide et efficace. Un peu trop parfois, parce qu’on oublie que je suis humaine, et non pas un ordinateur qui débite des mots comme un robot.

Cependant, ces petits aperçus dans la vie des gens sont bien comiques parfois… J’interprétais par exemple une déclaration enregistrée (de manière très sérieuse et professionnelle bien-sûr) sur un accident de voiture, quand il s’avéra que la voiture en question avait fait l’accident toute seule. Et oui, la voiture avait été garée en pente et le frein à main avait lâché, et donc la pauvre dame avait retrouvé son véhicule en bas de la pente, il était entré tout seul dans un garage en percutant au passage la voiture garée devant… On ne s’en était rendu compte que pendant la déclaration, et j’ai du retenir un petit rire !

Mais souvent, je me sens invisible et j’ai envie de dire à mes interlocuteurs :

1)      Moi pas machine ! On oublie que je suis humaine et que j’ai des limites, je ne suis pas une machine qui recrache tout ce que vous dites en simultané ou en subliminal… l’appel est en conférence, je ne suis pas à côté de votre interlocuteur, et si vous voulez que j’interprète tout ce que vous dites, c’est une bonne idée de vous arrêter parfois ?

2)      Don’t kill the messenger ! On veut tout dire, les insultes aussi, sans prendre en compte que l’interprète est simplement une messagère.  Ce n’est pas de ma faute si la société que vous appelez n’a pas de représentants francophones, si leur service clientèle est à votre avis « pourri »… je suis simplement là pour vous aider à communiquer et à vous faire entendre, alors pourquoi crier, pourquoi interrompre et pourquoi ces insultes ?

3)      J’entends tout, si, si ! Quand nous sommes en attente, je suis en ligne avec vous alors ce n’est pas une bonne idée d’aller vous soulager au cabinet, de parler de votre interprète (quoi que j’aime entendre : « elle parle vraiment bien le français, cette américaine ! Comme une française… » hahaha, elle est bonne celle-là !), ou de révéler les détails de votre complot ou manigances contre la société pour laquelle j’interprète…

4)      Écoutez ! La communication, c’est dans les deux sens… si vous n’écoutez pas les instructions, qu’elles soient dans votre langue ou une autre, et que vous n’arrêtez pas d’interrompre, la conversation durera quand même une heure (tant mieux pour moi !) et pourquoi demander une interprète si vous ne la laissez pas parler ? Et si la juge vous dit de vous taire et d’écouter, ou bien de donner 1-2 phrases à la fois pour qu’elle puisse savoir ce que vous dites à tout instant, c’est aussi une bonne idée d’obéir… c’est Mme la juge, au cas où vous aviez oublié ??

5)      Réfléchissez avant de parler ! Bien que votre estime de mes capacités miraculeuses d’interprète est appréciée, je ne suis pas non plus voyante, ou devin, ou oracle. Je ne vais pas deviner, et je ne sais pas ce que vous pensez… Alors je vous suggère de réfléchir avant de parler pour que je n’aie pas à interpréter vos marmonnements, absurdités et balivernes (cela me met vraiment dans l’embarras auprès de mon client qui pense que j’ai perdu la raison !). Et je ne peux pas non plus vous mettre des mots dans la bouche quand vous me demandez, désolée… Prenez votre temps pour bien formuler vos réponses, nous parviendrons ainsi à une communication bien plus efficace, soyez-en assuré !

Voilà, c’est tout pour mon petit coup de gueule. Ne vous inquiétez pas, chers lecteurs, chères lectrices, je n’abuserai pas non plus de votre indulgence et ce genre d’article ne sera pas publié trop fréquemment. Merci à vous, de m’avoir écoutée/ lue… je me sens libérée.

You know what they are, dear readers… These little sounds that we all make daily, whether we are expressing exctasy and anticipation upon being presented with a delicious, mouth-watering dessert (yum!! in English, or miam!! in French) or disgust when our sense of modesty or manners (savoir-vivre) has been challenged (yuk!! in English, or beurk!! in French).

I was reminded of these little interjections today, as I was reading a raving review of the new book “Les trucs d’anglais qu’on a oublié de vous enseigner” by Grant Hamilton, on the blog Le mot juste en anglais. I have myself been immersed in the American-English language for so many years (I think 10…), that I don’t even realize how “native” I have gone…

The beautiful thing about becoming bilingual, is that you instinctively switch the way your express yourself, your sounds, your intonation, even your body language from one language “set of rules” to the other!

After my first full-year immersion in the USA (I was 18 and worked as an au pair in South Carolina), I experienced the “reverse culture shock” when I returned to Strasbourg, France, to start my language studies. What was very strange, was that when I started classes the other students were convinced I was American!

They would come up to me and introduce themselves in English: “You are ze Américaine, right?”. I would reply in French, explain that I just came back from 1 year in the US but that I was from a village 60 km South of here… only to realize that my intonation in French had not quite yet returned to normal.

But rest assured, dear French-learners… the balance comes back. You eventually truly switch everything, and you start sounding “native” in both languages. So when I speak English, or even if I speak French to my American husband (which we have only done for 1 year now) but I am located in the USA, I say “ouch!!” when it hurts, “darn!!” when I am upset, “bang!!” when I talk about a door shutting.

But, when I speak French, or I am talking to a Francophone, I say “aïe!!” (or aï-eeeeeuh when it really hurts!), “zut!!”, “boum!!” respectively.

So you will know when the French language has become like a second skin to your whole body, not just your tongue, when you start reacting with these fun onomatopoeia. The best way to learn them: read some Tintin or Astérix et Obélix comic strips books, and you will be all set!

For a relaxing Sunday, I thought I would recommend one of the most beautiful French films ever made, which I had the opportunity to watch last Sunday evening (yay to Netflix!) with my American husband who had never seen it: “My Father’s Glory“, an adaptation of Marcel Pagnol‘s novel “La gloire de mon père“. The sequel is called “My mother’s castle” (“Le château de ma mère“).

The DVD will include English subtitles, but the following video of the French trailer is French audio only… If you have trouble understanding, just the beauty of the landscapes should captivate you enough to make you want to watch it! Provence is a region of France I have not yet taken my husband to, and we plan to visit that area in May hopefully… the weather should be perfect then.

The two films are an autobiography of famous French writer Marcel Pagnol. They are set in the period between 1900 and the First World War in 1914. Young Marcel was born in the country but raised in Marseilles. His father, Joseph, is a public school teacher in Marseilles. Marcel’s Aunt Rose marries Uncle Jules, who offers to split a vacation home in the Provence countryside (near Aubagne) to spend the summer break together as a family. Marcel is enchanted by the beauty of the arid mountainous landscape, full of surprises and treasures…

I will share it here and I will let you discover the poem translation by Richard Wilbur and prose translation by Carol Cosman in the book, which is really worth owning to have on your coffee table. The lovely pictures and proses will be enough to take you away and transport you on a voyage of your own!

One peculiarity of using and learning both English and French, is the prevalence of “faux-amis“; those “fake friends” that sound or look the same in both languages, but have complete different meanings. Usually they have been borrowed from French into the English language, but their usage has assigned them a new meaning.

I will try for our “mots rigolos” on Fridays to come up with some of those, and save us all a few incidents of embarrassment!

// cabinet // nom masculin: office, firm, practise, also an antique cabinet
// cabinets // nom masculin pluriel: toilet, GB loo, US bathroom, restroom

Quite confusing when “cabinet” is usually used in English for a cupboard or kitchen pantry; this is what the term originally meant in French as well, as a small separate room (un cabinet de toilette; un cabinet de débarras).
However, nowadays, we usually use “une armoire, un petit placard” for the pantry…

Usage:

Cabinet d’avocats Simon Associés // Simon & Associates Law Firm

Le cabinet de mon médecin généraliste, le Dr. Kassler, se trouve seulement à 2 km de chez moi. // My GP’s office, Dr. Kassler, is only 2 km away from my house.

Où se trouvent les cabinets chez toi? // Where is the bathroom located in your house?

The French language is so rich with expressions, and it associates verbs specifically with certain nouns to form an expression. In English, one verb can be changed into so many different meanings with a preposition (to take in/ out/ after/ along/ apart/ away…). In French, those different meanings are achieved with a whole expression (prendre part à…) or a distinct verb (emporter, enmener, démonter, …).

But enough grammar for today, and let’s learn to say:

// exercer // first group verb: to exercise, to practise, to train, to carry out, to exert

Usage:

Dr. Perrot exerce dans son cabinet en région parisienne depuis 23 ans. // Dr. Perrot has been practicing in his office in the Paris area for 23 years.

Maître Jean Dupond exerce en tant qu’avocat d’immigration à Londres. // Jean Dupond, Esq. practices immigration law in London.

Quel métier exercez-vous? // What is your occupation?

Je vais m’exercer à la plongée sous-marine avant mon voyage aux Bahamas. // I am going to practice diving before my trip to the Bahamas.

Tous les employés pourront exercer leurs (or: faire la levée des) stock options une fois qu’ils seront acquis. // All employees will be able to exercise their stock options once they are vested.

Although I will refrain from any political bias on my blog, I have to say that arguments and advertisements for/ against U.S. presidential candidates have just gotten more “ridicules”… How can a candidate be mocked because he does speak a foreign language? Does that make him less “American“?

Most presidents around the world speak one or two foreign languages, at a basic conversational level if not fluent… In the U.S., the last president to be fluent in a second language was Herbert Clark Hoover, who spoke Mandarin fluently, as well as the First Lady, after having worked in China for a couple of years. This is a sad fact for a country in which 1/4 of households speak a second language, other than English, at home…

Are you ever in a situation on the phone, in which you have a French-speaking caller on the line and you can’t understand each other at all? Or you are calling a place of business in Canada or Morocco, and you did not expect that the person on the other line would not speak a word of English?

This is a situation that my clients deal with all the time, and that is when they call an interpreter at Language Line to help overcome the language barrier… But here is a very important expression to use in that situation:

// Ne quittez pas ! // Please hold!

I have even learned to say this in Spanish, because so often when I introduce myself as the French interpreter, I hear: “No francés… I need e-spanish!!”. I learned to say: “No cuelgue por favor!” (Please hold)… “Buscamos un intérprete de español. ¡Un momento, Señora!” (We are looking for a Spanish interpreter. One moment madam!)…

You can also use:

Restez en ligne s’il vous plaît Monsieur/ Madame! // Please stay on the line/ hold the line, Sir/ Ma’am!

Un instant, je dois mettre l’appel en attente! // One moment, I need to put the call on hold!

Ne quittez pas s’il vous plaît, je cherche quelqu’un qui parle (le) français! // Please hold the line, I am looking for someone who speaks French!

Attendez! // Wait!

Un moment! // One moment!

I hope that helps and in a crunch, try and speak slowly and clearly to find out what the person needs before you can put them in touch with the right person/ language…
