As a new year begins, many of us take time to reflect on the old year and set goals for the new one. On a personal level, I defined 2011 as a year of disappointments and hope, and 2012 as the year of perseverance and faith. Just the other day, I found a short note that I wrote exactly a year ago, that I could define as a short poem, but also a prayer and a statement of a wish I wanted to come true. The return of the Frenchie…
20 décIt is so nice to have a permanent presence on the web that does not disappear when I enter a time of complete “non-blogging”. It may have seemed that I must have withdrawn from society to go off to intense jedi training or meditation, but in reality, I got to a point of busyness where I could not focus on “fun”, or creative work other than translation projects and my awesome marketing and advertising on-line class at NYU this past semester.

Croisière 2012 : Rome

Rome. Que dire de Rome sinon que c'est une ville historiquement extraordinaire et qu'y passer une journée n'est de loin pas suffisant. Il faudrait y passer une semaine pour voir ce que Rome a à nous offrir.
A Rome, tout est étiqueté Soupe Populaire des Quartiers Romains. Même les poubelles !
Ici, le général Maximus Decemus a combattu contre une comode.
Day 7 of our adventure, and the icing on the cake: Roma! With only a few hours to visit a city requiring at least one week to unveil all of its treasures, we focused on the vestiges of the Roman civilisation/ antiquity.
Despite the morning strike at the Coliseum, we were able to wait in line for one hour in the afternoon to finally visit a must-see monument.
In the meantime, the foras, the senate, the Rotonda, Trevi fountain, etc. kept us busy!
We made it back to the boat just in time with the one-hour train ride to the Civitavecchia port.
Same conclusion: now I know what I need to come back for!

Croisière 2012 : Sicile

Petite escale sympathique d'une demi-journée. Malheureusement, il nous faudra y retourner car nous n'avions pas le temps nécessaire pour nous approcher de l'attraction touristique principale : le volcan Etna.
Voici un petit point de vue de notre escale sicilienne.
On aura vu Taormina depuis un panoramique.

Had to share newly released pictures by Simon Be about the 6th day of our Mediterranean cruise spent visiting Sicily.
We did not get to see much of the Etna but at least we cruised by the smoking Stromboli, pretty amazing!

When registering for the translation conference in Orford (near Sherbrooke, QC), I had decided to fly into Montreal a day early to visit as much of the city as I could in 24 hours. A day is such little time to visit a city with so much history, art, beauty and gastronomy. However, I do not regret my little "escapade" from a tumultuous work routine and an intense (but highly instructive) professional conference.

Rue Fabre
I landed at the Montreal Trudeau Airport on Saturday, August 18 at noon (on schedule) and after stowing my heavier suitcase at the convenient staffed airport "locker room" (consigne), I made my way downtown with the 747 shuttle bus. From the Berri/ UQAM central station, it was an easy 2 metro stops up the orange line to Avenue Mont-Royal. With my 24-hour pass, I also had access to the bus network, and it was only a 5-minute ride to my airbnb room in an apartment located on Rue Fabre.

30 juilI find that when my workday of interpreting stressful (yet fulfilling) phone calls, translating tricky terminology, billing projects and bidding on new ones is over… I am ready to let my brain rest and to get my body working!
I could assimilate all the knowledge and wisdom in the world (if only I had a brain large enough to memorize every bit of information that matters!), but it would not lead anywhere if meanwhile, my body was deprived of any challenge or care. Sure, I could go to the gym and run around in circles like a lab rat (or worse, at a standstill!), or go to my man’s basement and try myself at bodybuilding (and I have before!)…

Croisière 2012 : Malte

Assurément, la plus belle escale de notre croisière. Cette île est un carrefour culturel bâti sur des siècles de conquête. Pour plus de renseignements, Wikipédia sera votre ami.
Déjà, le port est tellement joli qu'il mérite au moins deux photos.
Là, c'est nous.
Claire à passé un coup de fil, et hop...
...on avait notre taxi pour 6 personnes. Lowry, dit Kojak, était notre chauffeur.
Day 5 of our Mediterranean adventure: Malta.
My favorite stop for sure:
- It was the most relaxed; no big crowds - or mobs, it was easy to find a good driver and we had a full day.
- Our driver took us all over the island in his van, from the glass & pottery factories to the blue gorge. He was very personable, a true Maltese and spoiled us a V.I.P. Insider Tour!
- Malta itself is beautiful and so interesting, from the contrast of white sandstone and vibrant colors, to Valetta and the fisherman's village.
- We got to eat the most awesome lunch ever at a restaurant by the sea where our driver's daughter works (it is always great when you can support a local business...): we entered through the kitchen, picked 3 types of fish fresh from that morning, and enjoyed a "festin" (feast) with all the trimmings... local wine included!
- Maltese is the most diverse and interesting language I have ever heard, and is made up of Italian, Portuguese, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, English... but is written with the Latin alphabet. The Maltese cross represents the 8 founding nations of the island.
Croisière 2012 : Tunis

Le troisième jour de notre périple nous arrivons à Tunis. On a bien rigolé. C'était vraiment fun. Certains parmi nous n'ont pas aimé.
Comme ça, le port est charmant.
On a été accueilli en grande pompe : orchestre, chameau pour les dames, et tout tintouin.
Au sortir du port, une horde de taximen qui veulent tous travailler. Donc, après expérience, on vous conseille de prendre tout de même le taxi et de tirer le prix le plus bas.
Day 4 of our adventures... After making it through the taxi drivers mob at the port (it became irritating once a fight broke out between two drivers), it was a most enjoyable visit of Sidi Bou Said, a beautiful Mediterranean town with blue doors (see pictures in SimonBe's post)!
Carthage was amazing to see, to be there and imagine the presence of the ancient Punic civilization. But it was disappointing that there was very little signage, guidance to explore such an important UNESCO World Heritage and very little was done to preserve the site... However, I can say I have been there and it was still amazing!!
